Auburn and Alabama square off in fisherman’s Iron Bowl

AUBURN – The Bassmaster Classic this weekend will have a new version of the Iron Bowl that combines bass fishing with the nation’s fiercest collegiate rivalry.

College bass fishing teams from Auburn University and the University of Alabama will face off in the inaugural Bassmaster College Classic Saturday, Feb. 20, on Logan Martin Lake near Pell City. It is being held in conjunction with the professional Bassmaster Classic that will take place on Lay Lake.

Each college will be represented by three two-angler teams in the fishing match that begins at 6 a.m. and lasts until noon. Teams will fish within the confines of a five-fish limit per boat. Weigh-ins will be held at 2:30 p.m. Saturday at the Bassmaster Classic Expo in the Birmingham Jefferson Civic Center in the Toyota Tundra booth. The weigh-ins will be streamed live on Hooked Up on Bassmaster.com.

Auburn anglers are Shaye Baker, Jordan Lee, Paul Davis, Shane Powell, J.T. Murphy and Andrew Wendt. Alabama anglers are Ben Weldon, Warren Hoffman, David Rogers, Jeremy Christian, Matt Carter and Brian Morrow.

The winning team will advance to the 2011 Bassmaster College Classic in New Orleans to defend its title against a Louisiana school.

Fans can follow the 2010 College Bass Tour online at www.CollegeBass.com and on ESPNU, which will televise nine hours of coverage beginning next summer.
