Friends honor Raye T. Benefield with gift to Auburn Scholarship Campaign

AUBURN – More than 20 family members and friends of Raye T. Benefield have funded two endowed scholarships to Auburn University in his memory. The scholarships are designated for students from Guntersville High School and Marshall County.

Rayes friends chose to remember him in this way because of his great love for Auburn University, his wife Jean Benefield said.

Friend and longtime traveling companion Gary Gray said Raye was an avid supporter of Auburn athletics and a true road warrior, having traveled the six-hour round trip from Guntersville to Auburn more than 20 times during his last year and having followed the Auburn basketball team to 16 SEC tournaments.

His dedication and love of Auburn was an inspiration to the entire Auburn family, Gray said.

The gift will support the Auburn Scholarship Campaigns goal of raising $15 million by December 2011 to strengthen Auburns merit scholarship program for exceptional undergraduate students.

The Auburn Scholarship Campaign offers alumni and friends an opportunity to help provide considerably larger scholarships to recipients. Gifts are paired with current Spirit of Auburn or Academic Scholarships, which range from $2,500 to more than full tuition annually. As a result, students receive a more attractive and competitive financial package.
