Auburn’s Ag Alumni Association to honor five at Hall of Honor banquet

AUBURN – The Auburn University Agricultural Alumni Association will honor five individuals at its 2011 Hall of Honor banquet in recognition of their positive impact on Alabama agriculture. The banquet will be held Tuesday, Feb. 22, at 6:15 p.m. at The Hotel at Auburn University and Dixon Conference Center.

Three of the honorees will be inducted into the alumni association’s Hall of Honor, which recognizes living Alabamians who have made significant contributions to the state’s agriculture industry. They are Jerry Newby of Athens, representing the agribusiness sector of agriculture; Dallas Hartzog of Headland, representing the education and government sector; and Harold Pate of Lowndesboro, representing the production agriculture sector.

Newby is a Tennessee Valley farmer and president of Alfa Insurance and the Alabama Farmers Federation. Hartzog is a retired Alabama Cooperative Extension specialist whose work on peanuts has been a boon to farmers in the Wiregrass and throughout the state. Pate is a leader in the state and national cattle industry who founded an internationally known Charolais herd.

The association also will present its 2011 Agricultural Pioneer Awards to the families of the late John “Doc” Cottier, a long-time poultry science faculty member at Auburn, and the late B.W. “Buck” Appleton of Collinsville, an early leader in Alabama’s poultry industry. The Pioneer Awards are given posthumously to individuals who played a role in shaping Alabama’s agriculture industry. Both of the honorees received their bachelor’s degrees in agriculture from Alabama Polytechnic Institute, Cottier in 1929 and Appleton in 1934.

The Ag Alumni Association established the Hall of Honor in 1984. The awards banquet is held each year in conjunction with the association’s annual meeting.

Tickets to the 2011 Hall of Honor banquet are $50 per person. Opportunities for corporate sponsorships of the event are available. For more information on corporate sponsorships or the awards and banquet, contact Elaine Rollo at (334) 844-3204 or rollome@auburn.edu.
