Gov. Riley declares February Alabama Healthy Marriage Month

AUBURN – Gov. Bob Riley has proclaimed February as “Alabama Marriage Month,” and will sign a proclamation on Friday, Feb. 8, declaring the importance of healthy, stable relationships and marriages for Alabama citizens and communities.

In conjunction with this activity, the Alabama Community Healthy Marriage Initiative, of which Auburn University is a member, will be hosting marriage celebration events throughout the state.

On Feb. 11, winners of a state-wide eighth grade essay contest will be announced. Participants in the contest were asked to write about the “Best Marriage They Know.” One winner from each congressional district, the child’s teacher and the couple featured in the essay will be invited to the Governor’s mansion for a celebration of marriage on Sunday, Feb. 17, from 2 p.m -4 p.m.

Alabama citizens who have been married for twenty-five years or more are also invited to the event. Eligible couples should call (334) 844-8715 by Tuesday, Feb. 12, to receive an invitation and security information.
