AUBURN – Designer Billy Reid, award-winning luxury brand apparel designer, is the distinguished lecturer for Auburn University’s 2007 Grisham-Trentham Lecture Series on Thursday, April 12, at 11 a.m. in The Hotel at Auburn University and Dixon Conference Center auditorium. The lecture series gives students exposure to internationally respected experts in the fields of design and fashion.
Reid, a native of Louisiana and now a resident of Alabama, is a manufacturer and retailer of designer clothing, premium denim, handmade shoes, accessories and antiques. His company is headquartered in Dallas with a design studio and flagship shop at Pickett Place in historic downtown Florence, Ala.
According to Lenda Jo Connell, AU College of Human Sciences professor of consumer affairs and coordinator of the lecture series, Reid draws inspiration from his Southern roots to create designs that reflect genteel Southern comfort.
Also featured at the event on April 12 will be the competitive design work of AU apparel and interior design students. The designs, described by Connell as “art disguised as apparel,” will be on display in the hotel foyer before the lecture.
The lecture series was established by retired consumer affairs professor Gary Trentham to expose students to world-class designers and business leaders. It is also named for painter and textile designer Betty Grisham and her late husband, Charles, an Auburn graduate.
