NYC fashion designer to deliver Grisham-Trentham Lecture at Auburn University

AUBURN UNIVERISTY – New York City fashion designer Hilton Hollis will be on the campus of Auburn University Thursday, March 27, as the keynote speaker for the 27th annual Grisham-Trentham Lecture Series. The public lecture will be held at 11 a.m. in the Student Center ballroom.

Hollis, a native of Natchez, Miss., attended New York’s Fashion Institute of Technology. Since graduating in 1999, Hollis has collaborated with many notable designers, including Dana Buchman, Ralph Lauren and John Bartlett. He started his self-titled women’s wear company more than seven years ago.

“My aim is to make a product that is specifically targeted to the Hilton Hollis customer and to give her clothes that she can integrate into her wardrobe and wear happily for years, Hollis said.

Also on March 27, the Apparel Merchandising and Design Association will present Soirée, the annual fashion show and design gallery, at 7:30 p.m. in the Auburn Arena. Doors open at 6 p.m. for viewing of mounted exhibits showcasing the work of design and merchandising students. Attendees should enter the arena through the Scholarship Entrance off the arena parking lot.

The fashion show will include student designs as well as collections from Southern Fashion House, founded by Alabama native Stephanie Carter. Christy Carlisle Smith, an alumna of the apparel merchandising, design and production management program in the College of Human Sciences at Auburn, is currently the company’s CEO. The fashion show will also feature student designs from the South Korean fashion programs at Kunkuk University and Hanyang University.

While the morning lecture is free, the evening event requires an admission fee. Tickets are $15 for general seating or $50 for premier seating. Proceeds will go to support the Apparel Merchandising and Design Association Peer Giving Scholarship. The Grisham-Trentham Lecture Series was started at Auburn University in 1987 by Professor Gary Trentham as a way of bringing world-class designers and business leaders to campus to share their experiences with Auburn students. It is supported by an endowment created by the late Charles Grisham, an Auburn alumnus, and Betty Grisham, an artist and textile designer, from Huntsville.
