AUBURN - Following an internal campus search, Auburn University Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs Mary Ellen Mazey has announced the appointment of J. Emmett Winn as associate provost.
Winn had served as interim associate provost for five months, following the departure of Sharon Gaber to be provost at the University of Arkansas. As associate provost, Winn is responsible for faculty hiring and personnel issues as well as issues related to academic policies and procedures. Reporting directly to him are the Jule Collins Smith Museum of Fine Art, the Graduate School, the Office of Information Technology, the English as a Second Language Program and the Office of International Education.

AUBURN - The U.S. Department of Energy has awarded Auburn University a $4.9 million grant to develop new production systems to collect woody biomass from pine plantations for making bioenergy.
Auburn's Center for Bioenergy and Bioproducts will lead the project, "High Tonnage Forest Biomass Production Systems from Southern Pine Energy Plantations," as part of a consortium that includes central Alabama company Corley Land Services, the U.S. Department of Agriculture Forest Service and companies from the U.S. and Canada.

AUBURN - Auburn University joined with the 11 other Southeastern Conference institutions today in the launch of the SEC Academic Network, a Web site (www.secacademicnetwork.com) designed to promote academic endeavors of SEC universities using ESPN360.com technology.
The Academic Network, developed using technology and coordination from ESPN Digital Media and Origin Digital, will feature content from every institution ranging from research, innovation and economic development to community partnerships, civic engagement and service.

AUBURN - The Colleges of Agriculture and Veterinary Medicine at Auburn University have achieved accreditation from the Association for Assessment and Accreditation of Laboratory Animal Care International. The association is a private, nonprofit organization that promotes the humane treatment of animals in science through voluntary accreditation and assessment programs.
"AAALAC International accreditation is considered the gold standard in independently evaluating animal programs across the globe," said John Mason, Auburn University vice president for research. "The animal use programs in the two colleges were commended for providing quality and responsible care of laboratory and research animals reviewed during a comprehensive and rigorous week-long site visit by six independent program experts from across the United States."

AUBURN - Auburn University recently created a professorship in the Samuel Ginn College of Engineering through a donation by H. Vincent Groome III, owner of Groome Transportation, which operates Tiger Transit system. The gift was given in honor of Groome's father. The Harold V. Groome Jr. Professorship in Transportation Engineering will support an exemplary civil engineering faculty member who specializes in transportation engineering instruction and research.
Auburn has undertaken a professorship initiative that will create 81 endowed professorships across campus. The university has agreed to add $7,500 annually in perpetuity to the earnings of any new professorship endowment established by Sept. 30. Professorships can be established for $150,000 during this period, half the normal amount.

AUBURN - Ensign Lauren Nevels, a recent Auburn University graduate, has been recognized as the top Naval Reserve Officers Training Corp Midshipman in the nation.
Nevels received the Admiral James L. Holloway Jr. Award in a ceremony June 30. Rear Adm. Robert Crates, president of the Southern Region of the Navy League of the United States, was on hand to present the annual award.
"This award is such an unexpected honor," Nevels said. "I am so appreciative of all the people who have poured so much into me - the Auburn NROTC staff that trained me to be a naval officer, the nursing and medical staff that have helped me along the way, and especially my dad, who gave me encouragement every step of the way and is always so proud of me."

AUBURN - Auburn University's Distance Learning and Outreach Technology Department is teaming up with JER Online, a nationally recognized source of online education, to provide Web-based courses geared toward technical and professional training.
JER Online works with nationally and internationally accredited educational institutions to offer continuing education, adult education, workforce education, community education and customized training.
This partnership will enable Auburn to develop its own curriculua for online classes, while offering courses developed by other JER Online affiliates.

U.S. News and World Report magazine has caught on to what Auburn residents have known for a long time--that it is a great place to live, attend school and raise a family. The magazine selected the city of Auburn as a top 10 choice among American cities. The rankings recognize Auburn University as a major contributor to the quality of life of city residents.

AUBURN – Oliver D. Kingsley Jr., associate dean in Auburn University's Samuel Ginn College of Engineering, recently received the Henry DeWolf Smyth Nuclear Statesman Award for his contributions to public knowledge of nuclear energy. The award was established jointly by the American Nuclear Society and the Nuclear Energy Institute.
Kingsley received the award, which recognizes statesmanlike contributions to discussion of nuclear energy, at the Nuclear Energy Institute's annual conference, an assembly of organizations representing businesses and professionals involved in commercial nuclear technologies. The Nuclear Energy Institute develops policy on key legislative and regulatory issues affecting the industry.

AUBURN – The Auburn University Athletic Department and Tigers Unlimited recently announced the endowment of the Ralph "Shug" Jordan Professorship in memory and honor of the beloved Auburn coach.
During the recent A-Day festivities, Athletics Director Jay Jacobs made a special presentation to Ralph Jordan Jr. and Provost Mary Ellen Mazey, who will award the professorship to a deserving faculty member.
Jacobs said the professorship was established to support the academic mission of Auburn University and President Jay Gogue's initiative to increase professorships on campus.
