AUBURN - The Auburn University Department of Music and the Auburn University Bands will present the Auburn University Symphonic Band in concert on Thursday, Oct. 22, at 7:30 p.m. at the Opelika Performing Arts Center at Opelika High School.
The Symphonic Band will feature two faculty soloists, Ann Knipschild on oboe and William Shaffer on horn, both members of the Auburn University Department of Music faculty.

AUBURN - Auburn University will host the Alabama Gubernatorial Forum 2010 on Tuesday, Nov. 3, at 7 p.m. in the Student Center Ballroom.
All gubernatorial candidates who declared candidacy prior to Sept. 25 were invited to participate in the forum. Participating candidates are Robert Bentley, Bradley Byrne, Artur Davis, Kay Ivey, Tim James, Bill Johnson and Ron Sparks. The moderator for the event is Jeremy Campbell of ABC 33/40 in Birmingham.

AUBURN – A crowd of cheering onlookers packed Auburn University's Student Activities Center recently to see the 2009 War Eagle BEST Robotics competition. Twenty-four Alabama middle and high school teams showed how they had met this year's challenge to design a robot to help with today's energy crisis.
Six weeks prior to the competition in Auburn, the teams received their kits of standardized parts and were given the details of this year's game, “High Octane,” a challenge to design robots to collect and employ common molecules, CO2 and H2O, and essential resources to complete a series of chemical reactions to maximize production of the alternative fuels.

AUBURN - The 2009 War Eagle Native American Festival will take place on Friday, Oct. 23, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on the grounds of the Jule Collins Smith Museum of Fine Art at Auburn University.
The Auburn University Multicultural Center and Access and Community Initiatives, both of which are units of the Office of Diversity and Multicultural Affairs, will host the free public event.

AUBURN - The Chinese Ambassador to the United States, Wenzhong Zhou, will visit Auburn University Oct. 20-21 at the invitation of Auburn President Jay Gogue to promote international education partnerships.
Ambassador Zhou will give a public presentation, "China's Development and China-U.S. Relations," at 2:30 p.m. Oct. 21 in the Auburn University Student Center. His visit also will include campus tours as well as gatherings hosted by President and Mrs. Gogue, the Chinese Professional Association and the Chinese Student Organization.
Governor Bob Riley will host the ambassador at 11:30 a.m. Oct. 21 in Montgomery.

AUBURN - The Auburn University Chamber Winds and Percussion will perform in an evening of music for small ensembles on Tuesday, Oct. 13, at 7:30 p.m. at First Baptist Church in Opelika. The concert is presented by the Auburn University Department of Music and the Auburn University Bands.
Selections will span almost 400 years and feature instrumentation from as few as three to as many as 35 musicians in the final selection. Featured composers will include Modest Mussorgsky, Maurice Ravel, Gordon Jacob and Alfred Reed.
The Auburn University Chamber Winds and Percussion are a select group from the Symphonic Band conducted by the director of bands, Rick Good.
The Auburn University Symphonic Winds and Percussion will also present a concert on Thursday, Oct. 22, at 7:30 p.m. at First Baptist Church in Opelika. All concerts are free and open to the public.

The Committee of 19, Auburn University's leadership team for the War on Hunger, has designated Oct. 12-16 as Hunger Awareness Week at Auburn University. This annual event highlights the plight of the one billion chronically hungry people throughout the developing world and draws attention to the needs of individuals and families in the local community.
Events begin on Monday, Oct. 12, at 5 p.m. with the Student Government Association's 16th annual Beat Bama Food Drive. For more information, go to http://www.beatbamafooddrive.com.

AUBURN – “Cry, the Beloved County,” the 1995 film adaptation of Alan Paton’s 1948 novel, will be shown Thursday, Oct. 1, at 7 p.m. in the ballroom of the Auburn University Student Center. Critics have described the movie as illuminating the rigid and racist structures of society in South Africa that would later give rise to apartheid.
Overtoun Jenda, a native of the African country of Malawi and head of the Auburn’s Office of Diversity and Multicultural Affairs, will offer brief introductory remarks. There will be an opportunity for group discussion following the film. Sponsored by Auburn’s Honors College, the film is open to the public and admission is free.

AUBURN - Fabien Cousteau, grandson of the late undersea explorer and filmmaker Jacque-Yves Cousteau and an internationally known environmentalist and filmmaker in his own right, will present the E.T. York lecture, "One Water One People," at 7 p.m., Sept. 22 at The Hotel at Auburn University and Dixon Conference Center. His presentation will focus on water-related environmental issues.
Cousteau grew up exploring the sea and the world with his grandfather and his father, Jean-Michel. After earning a degree in environmental economics from Boston University, Cousteau meshed his family legacy of championing environmental protection with his business acumen by successfully spearheading the development of new environmentally sustainable products and business models.

AUBURN - The Jule Collins Smith Museum of Fine Art at Auburn University will present the documentary film "Dare Not Walk Alone" on Tuesday, Sept. 15, at 6 p.m. as part of the Southern Arts Federation's Southern Circuit Tour of Independent Filmmakers. Following the screening of his film, producer/director Jeremy Dean will engage the audience in a discussion about the film and his work as a filmmaker.
The Museum Cafe will offer its lunch menu before the movie from 5 -6 p.m. Go to www.jcsm.auburn.edu for the menu.
"Dare Not Walk Alone" uses interviews and rarely seen news footage about an incident in St. Augustine, Fla. in the mid-1960s that received worldwide publicity and may have influenced passage of the Civil Rights Act into law.
