Alabama 4-H Center named for W. Gaines Smith

AUBURN – The Alabama 4-H Club Foundation has named its environmental science education building at the Alabama 4-H Center near Columbiana after longtime Alabama Cooperative Extension System Director W. Gaines Smith.

Smith’s Extension leadership has spanned 45 years, and he has held leadership positions at the county, district, regional and state levels. He has led ACES through times of tight budgets, organizational downsizing and the redesign of the programming process. He currently serves on the National 4-H Council Board of Trustees.

Alabama 4-H to kick off centennial year at Auburn University Aug. 29

AUBURN – Alabama 4-H, the state’s oldest youth development organization, will launch the celebration of its centennial year on the campus of Auburn University on Friday, Aug. 29, to honor the thousands of youth, volunteers and alumni who are part of Alabama 4-H.

The kickoff celebration will begin at 2 p.m. on Cater Hall lawn as dozens of Alabama 4-H’ers from across the state showcase their projects, a diverse array including rocketry, archery, technology, photography, design and animal husbandry.
