Auburn University to hold sixth annual Boshell Diabetes Research Day

AUBURN UNIVERSITY – Auburn University will hold its sixth annual Boshell Diabetes and Metabolic Diseases Research Day on Friday, March 1, at The Hotel at Auburn University and Dixon Conference Center. The event will bring together experts from around the United States to present current topics related to diabetes and the role of obesity in its development.

The meeting features research presentations throughout the day and evening.

Morris White, Harvard Medical School professor of pediatrics and an investigator with the Howard Hughes Medical Institute, will talk about hepatic insulin resistance and metabolic disease in the keynote presentation. White investigates the molecular basis of insulin signal transduction to understand the pathophysiology of diabetes and other disorders, including obesity, and cardiovascular and retinal diseases.

Auburn University’s Boshell Diabetes Research Day to feature top experts on obesity

AUBURN – Auburn University will hold the fifth annual Boshell Diabetes Research Day on Friday, March 2, at The Hotel at Auburn University and Dixon Conference Center, featuring some of the nation’s top diabetes and obesity researchers.

The meeting features research presentations throughout the day and evening. Highlights will include American science writer Gary Taubes, bestselling author of “Why We Get Fat” and “Good Calories, Bad Calories,” who will discuss his theory that certain kinds of carbohydrates have led to our current obesity epidemic; keynote speaker Randy Seeley, director of the Cincinnati Diabetes and Obesity Center, who will speak on novel insights into the brain regulation of energy balance; and Wendy Demark-Wahnefried, Webb Endowed Chair of Nutrition Sciences at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, who will talk about the role of obesity in the development of various cancers and on the role of nutrition in cancer survival.

Hale County clinic awarded $10,000 grant for diabetes testing

AUBURN – A medical clinic in rural Hale County, where student pharmacists from the Auburn University Harrison School of Pharmacy are trained, has been awarded a $10,000 grant to help test patients for diabetes.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Alabama has the highest prevalence rate of diabetes in the country, and Hale County is one of the highest in the state.

Hale County residents also face illiteracy, significant financial hardship, lack of transportation and destruction left by April’s tornadoes. The clinic, located approximately 20 miles south of Tuscaloosa, was not damaged is the storms, but it serves patients who were affected from Tuscaloosa and many small surrounding communities.

AUBURN – Auburn University will host its fourth annual Boshell Diabetes Research Day on Friday, March 4 at The Hotel at Auburn University and Dixon Conference Center, featuring some of the nation’s top diabetes and obesity researchers.

“Scientists will present some of the latest breakthroughs related to diabetes and the role of obesity in its development,” said Robert Judd, the Boshell Chair in Diabetes and Metabolic Diseases in Auburn’s College of Veterinary Medicine. “We will have presentations and scientific posters from a number of Auburn faculty and students as well as from other major institutions.”

Auburn’s Boshell Diabetes Research Day features top scientists, former Miss America

AUBURN – Auburn University will welcome top diabetes researchers as well as a former Miss America when it hosts the second annual Boshell Diabetes Research Day on March 6 at The Hotel at Auburn University and Dixon Conference Center.

“We will cover the latest research related to diabetes and the role of obesity in its development,” said Robert Judd, the Boshell Chair in Diabetes and Metabolic Diseases in Auburn’s College of Veterinary Medicine. “We also are pleased to have Miss America 1999 Nicole Johnson presenting a talk about diabetes awareness.”
