Auburn-engineered football training device has roots in tornado cleanup efforts

AUBURN UNIVERSITY – Auburn University mechanical engineering students in Professor David Dyer’s comprehensive design class take good ideas and help turn them into sleek, customer-ready products. Interestingly, the good ideas can be generated at the most unusual times.

One idea, now a finished product called the SledHammer, originated when a high school football coach helped his neighbors remove debris from their yards after the April 2011 tornadoes ripped across Alabama. Vaughn Maceina, now a strength coach and teacher at Auburn Junior High School, was living and coaching in the north Alabama town of Guntersville.

The Hotel at Auburn University to kick off football home opener with two 11-week-old tiger cubs

Tiger CubAUBURN UNIVERSITY – Auburn University football fans can meet, play with and take photos of real tiger cubs Friday, Sept. 14, at The Hotel at Auburn University. From 3-6 p.m., Auburn supporters can play and pose with Fatima and Ceylon, two 11-week-old tiger cubs from the Alabama Gulf Coast Zoo.

Although there is no cost to see the tigers, guests are asked to give a donation in order to hold the tiny tigers and have pictures taken with them. Photo opportunities will be available on a first-come, first-served basis, so Tiger fans are encouraged to arrive early. All money raised during the event will benefit the Alabama Gulf Coast Zoo.

Auburn University’s ‘Football, Fans and Feathers’ raptor program kicks off Sept. 14

AUBURN UNIVERSITY – The Southeastern Raptor Center hosts educational, birds-in-flight raptor programs on Fridays before Auburn University home football games. Hawks, falcons and eagles will be free-flown from flight towers, enabling guests to see these raptors flying close.

“Football, Fans and Feathers” kicks off Sept. 14; other dates are Sept. 21, Oct. 5, 26 and Nov. 2, 9 and 16. Programs begin at 4 p.m. and take place in the 350-seat Edgar B. Carter Educational Amphitheater at 1350 Pratt-Carden Drive off Shug Jordan Parkway. For GPS, use 1350 Raptor Road.

Visitors learn about the residents of the Southeastern Raptor Center during these entertaining programs, which are open to the public. Admission is $5 each and registration is not required. Admission is $3 a person for school groups of 25 or more, and those groups should call (334) 844-6943 in advance. Children under three are admitted free.

Carter Educational Amphitheater on Raptor Road off Shug Jordan Parkway.

During “Football, Fans and Feathers,” visitors learn about the residents of the Southeastern Raptor Center. Hawks, falcons and eagles will be free-flown from flight towers allowing guests to see these raptors flying close.

Coach of the Year award presentation to take place in Auburn A-Day pregame ceremony

AUBURN – The official presentation of Liberty Mutual’s Coach of the Year award will take place April 16 at Auburn University’s A-Day game during a pre-game ceremony. Auburn alumni cast more than 80,000 votes for coach Gene Chizik in the first round, a new record for the competition. Howard Nelson, board member of the Auburn Alumni Association and chair of the scholarship committee, will accept the $30,000 check on behalf of the alumni association from Liberty Mutual.

Liberty Mutual made a $50,000 donation to the charities of Chizik’s choice, which were aTeam Ministries and the Boys and Girls Clubs of Greater Lee County. Representatives from these organizations will attend the presentation to accept their checks.
