Influence of gospel music on early rock ‘n’ roll to be subject of AU’s Discover Auburn lecture series April 16

AUBURN – Tim Dodge, reference librarian and history subject specialist at Auburn University’s Ralph Brown Draughon Library, will speak on the influence of gospel music on early rock ‘n’ roll on Wednesday, April 16, at 3 p.m., in the Special Collections and Archives Department of the Draughon Library.

As blues great Muddy Waters once declared, “The blues had a baby and they called it rock ‘n’ roll.” While most people are aware of the blues and country roots of rock ‘n’ roll, fewer know about the crucial role played by gospel music. Using a combination of lecture and samples of recordings, Dodge will trace the multifaceted and sometimes surprising connections between the sacred and profane worlds of gospel music and early rock ‘n’roll.
