Ask Alabama poll shows what Alabamians consider priorities in the workplace

AUBURN – A statewide survey of Alabama residents found that men and women agree that better benefits packages and higher wages should top the list of changes or improvements sought in the workplace.

When it comes to other employment priorities, however, gender differences are evident. Most notably, a majority of women care a lot about flexible work hours and schedules and also about the availability of onsite or convenient childcare.

Sixty-seven percent of women describe childcare as “very important,” compared to 55 percent of men. Sixty-one percent of women rate flexible hours and schedules as very important while just 49 percent of men concur.

New graduates can succeed in tough job market

AUBURN – With no previous experience, no savings account to dip into and college loans to pay off, a recession could not come at a worse time for students about to graduate from college. Auburn University’s Career Development Services office is using all its resources to help prepare Auburn students for the challenging task of finding a job.

“With the unemployment rate at 7.2 percent, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, college graduates face the daunting task of entering a work force that is dwindling day by day,” said Nancy Bernard, director of Career Development Services at Auburn.
